Mold remediation in Salt Lake City

Request a remediation quote from a separate remediation company, then have an independent inspector confirm the work. The two never share your request.

What Salt Lake City homes tend to deal with

These are general patterns in Wasatch Front housing, not measurements. Your home may have none of them.

  • Basements. Many Salt Lake homes have basements, and a lot of them are finished. Moisture from a foundation wall or a plumbing line can soak the back of the drywall and the bottom plate of the framing long before a stain shows on the room side.
  • Swamp coolers. Evaporative coolers are common in older Salt Lake homes. They work by adding moisture to the air, and a cooler that leaks, overflows or runs into poorly ventilated rooms can keep nearby materials damp.
  • Spring snowmelt and foundation leaks. When snow melts against the house, water can collect along the foundation and find its way through cracks or window wells. Gutters, downspouts and grading that move water away from the walls matter here.
  • Attics in winter. Warm, damp air from bathrooms or kitchens that reaches a cold roof deck can condense and wet the sheathing, especially where fans vent into the attic instead of outside.

Whatever the source, the EPA's brief guide to mold and moisture is clear that the moisture has to be fixed, or the mold comes back. A remediation quote should say who fixes the water source, not only who removes the growth.

Before you hire

Ask for IICRC certification and proof of insurance, a written scope that names the containment and the materials coming out, and references. The EPA's mold cleanup guidance says to make sure a contractor has experience cleaning up mold. Our Utah mold remediation guide covers what remediation involves and the questions to ask, and what mold remediation costs covers pricing.

After the cleanup: an independent clearance test

The company that did the work shouldn't be the one to decide it's finished. Book a clearance test with an independent inspector who doesn't sell remediation. Clearance requests go to the testing lane, never to a remediation company.

Salt Lake City mold remediation questions

Does mold really grow in Salt Lake City's dry climate?

Yes. Dry outdoor air doesn't keep water out of a house. Mold grows wherever materials stay wet: a slow plumbing leak, a seeping basement wall, a leaking swamp cooler, or a bath fan venting into the attic.

Should I get a mold test before a remediation quote?

Only if it will change the decision. If the mold is visible and you plan to remove it, the EPA says sampling is usually unnecessary. If you smell mold but can't find it, or water got behind finished walls, a test from an independent inspector can show how far the problem goes.

Who checks the work when the remediation is done?

An independent inspector, not the company that did the cleanup. Clearance test requests go to our testing network, whose inspectors never sell or perform remediation.

Request a remediation quote

Tell us where the mold is, whether there's an active leak, and whether you own or rent. Your request goes to a separate remediation company for a quote. Requesting a quote doesn't commit you to anything.
